Did anyone mention thread subscription - get a personal email update when a
response is added to a thread that you subscribed to. |

We just had a complaint that our "social interactions" are distracting "some"
people from their coding and I would concede that it would be nice if the
forum sorted on the threads 1st, allowing you to select the ones you want to
read; instead of every comment from every thread popping into the same list.
Well . . . it would be nice :)

Hey Chris -
Besides YouTube and NetFlix, HTML five is supported today on a whole lot of sites. Apple basically started
a fight with Adobe about it, and now even DreamWeaver support HTML5. I initially sided with Flash, until I
really saw the difference. Now I am an HTML5 proponent.
Here is a kinda cool site you might look at.

Paul,
I thought HTML5 was still vaporware. When was it released? Wiki says not
released yet.

I like the whole idea except for one teeny tiny issue -
Get rid of the FLASH part and use HTML5.
I often access the site via my iPad or iPhone, or via other devices that do not use Adobe Flash.
YouTube, Google, and many others are using HTML5 instead of Flash, with very good results. Better than
Flash video for my money. :)

Bob,
Keep in mind that a lot of us have to deal with corporate guideline so if we
have an ad-blocker or a flash blocker, it's very often not of our choosing.
More frightening, do I really want to see a profile picture of Edman? |

The ability to respond to a post by clicking on it and pulling in quoted text
prepopulated in the textarea would be nice. Would save us a copy/paste.

TDaly,
I like that idea. The new forum uses IDENTITY columns, so uniqueness should be
simple enough. Also, I currently do something like that (unique id across the
system) on the ClassAnova.com website. |

Couple of ideas. How about a serial number for each post in a thread. It
would make it easy to refer to a specific comment. Or better, the serial
number should be cross-thread so you could refer to any specific post. Maybe
make that serial number part of a "permalink" url. |

W00T! That is very good news; this site although extremely useful, is showing
it's age :-/
On my wish list is a button I could click that would then upload whichever
programming language and/or skills I select into my head :) I suppose that
would have to be in the Optional Content area ;p
In addition, maybe a way to find the threads that you've posted on; most
forums have that in the profile area and it makes it easier to follow up on
things when you've been away a while or you're just trying to find something
you posted about a couple months back, but can't quite remember where.
Another nice feature might be added to the main list to show who started the
thread and who the last poster was w/date/time.
I like the avitar idea too; like having a nice pic for the forums. |

The flash thing is for advanced advertisements. however, I'm finding out that
our midrange vendors mostly have used animated GIF files instead of flash. So
Flash may not be required except to copy source code from the web page to the
clip board. |

I like the source code archive idea. Maybe be able to tag source files with
keywords.
The 5star rating is interesting. Would this apply to threads or maybe to
source files too?
I'm not so keen on the requirement for flash. For a specific feature sure,
but for just visiting the site??? |

hee hee heeeeee.....good day to yank chains!!!!
okay, i'll give the sepll chekker a break!
much like the safety on a firearm, i dont trust spell checkers most of the
time, because someone always adds their version of how they think it should be
spelled.
the only true spell checker is the person on the other end of the finger tips.

Sarge, spell checker happens to be included in the one form of input control,
but not the other. So depending on which one we implement, we'll either have it
or not. I think Windows Internet Explorer is the only browser that does NOT
include a built-in spell checker for text fields. So I really don't miss it.
Neil, that's an interesting idea. How so? Like a facebook style thing where a
private message thread is created between you and someone else, or a "send this
person an email" without the sender knowing your email? |

We are launching a new interactive website in October (after RPG World finishes)
that includes a revised Forum User Interface.
Aside for being an iGUI (my term) that allows you enter styled text (bold,
italic, underline, colors, etc.) we will also be including a COMMENTS option for
our content (articles, downloadable code, videos, podcasts, etc.) This comment
interface will also be iGUI, but that's not important.
My question is: What other features would you think are needed for our new
format to succeed?
Some suggestions have been:
5-start rating system
"Share" button to post links to Facebook, Twitter, digg, etc.
Thumbnail photos of our users included in their comments/posts
User-source code archive feature (user-created code that can be shared)
We are also looking at the advertising model. Today we basically have no
advertising and rely on my pocketbook. Some users do contribute something every
years (thank you!) but that number is literally a handful.
The new website will have an optional fee for additional "premium" content and
may also have advertising (assuming we can sell advertising <g>).
The optional content/fee being talked about most is $2/month, recurring.
So you'd sign up and every month we'd charge your card $2 (probably through
PayPal or American Express or Visa). Again, the paid content "section" is for
additional access to stuff that costs us money, such as our video and audio
podcasts, working utilities, training webinars, and so on. Existing stuff would
still be no charge, but may have advertising on it.
Also if you have an ad-blocker or prohibit flash video, the site will not work
at all.
