WDSC 7 is the first one I used, but from what I understand from others, the
earlier versions were kinda painful in comparison.

I have both WDSC7 and RDi. RDi is currently running in my Virtual Box
environment. I still use WDSC7 more since it's in my main environment still
and I haven't completely made the switch there. Maybe as I use RDi more, I'll
see that it's much better in various way, but I have to say that I'm happy with
WDSC7 and have very few problems with it. I've used it since it came out.
Maybe I'm easily impressed since it's such a huge step up from programming in
SEU. I never used any previous versions of WDSC.

Thanks Bob, I will try Non "Free" option.

Ironically I received my WDSc 7.x CDs the day after I ordered and paid for RDi
7.5. So now I have both loaded as the IBM Installer can't seem to figure out
which one to get rid of. :)

v7.5 is a bit faster, yawn, and does seem to be less dumb than v7.1

But all in all, it still feels like a college grad's first attempt at writing a
Windows program (i.e., very amateur design and feature set).

So I'd suggest you use the version for which you do not have to pay
additional money. Neither version is "free". But like the Free Credit Report dot
come thing, you pay monthly for the "free" version, or your pay a one-time fee
for the not-free version. Its up to you.

Thanks Finkpad.

Viking is spot on:

* WDSC is free if you're on maintenance.
* RDi will run you about $795 per developer, or $1995 per developer
for the SOA version.

With a little pestering you will be able to get hold of WDSC7 (for $free)
as this is (basically) the previous version of RDi.

I use WDSC7 and am very pleased with it. It runs equally well on both Winxp
and Win7.

I've heard many people saying that RDi is much better product with quite a few
tweaks and code/speed enhancements but considering WDSC7 is $free... it
gets a big tick from me ;)

Yes, I believe it depends upon your machine and a few other factors... for
ours, we were entitled to zero free RDi licenses.

Thanks DaleB; I will definetely check with IBM and update you all

We're pricing upgrade from V5R4 to V6R1 right now. If you already have 5722-WDS,
you're entitle to a number of named users as part of the upgrade (the number
appears to vary by processor group). You can convert any or all of these to RDi
licenses at less than the normal charge at the time of the upgrade. I don't know
if the discounted per user license varies by processor group; your best bet is
still to check with IBM.

RDi Seems to be expensive. Thanks I will bargain with IBM.

WDSC is free if you're on maintenance.

RDi will run you about $795 per developer, or $1995 per developer for
the SOA version.

But as Neil suggests, check with IBM and/or your business partner.

Yes neilrh
My questions is related to WDSc/RDi and its price.
I will check with IBM; but if anybody know the approximate for 5 developers
licence in mid-size company that would be great help.

Thank you Neilrh and thanks everyone in advance

abc400 - is your question related to WDSc/RDi or the entire Websphere family
of products.

As an aside questions concerning pricing is probably better directed to IBM.

I would take it a bit futher and say that WebSphere is a group of products
from IBM. Using the example below by Ken M, it is more like Office.

Microsoft = IBM.  (Company Name)

Websphere = Office. (Group of products that are related)

Word = Portal, (actual programs in group)
Exel = WDSC,
Outlook = App server,
Etc....

Now, like Ken said, you can better state what you are interested in??

WebSphere is IBM's branding of several pieces of software. This 'Microsoft'
when you see WebSphere. Example:

Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Access

In IBM's case its

WebSphere Portal
WebSphere Application Server
WebSphere Development Studio Client for iSeries

So that is what WebSphere is. You might be refering to Wdsc only but maybe you
can post a more focused request since the branding was explained to you?
